Lot 216:
Description
A collection of two professional instruments comprising an Abney level and a spirit level. The Abney level clinometer is constructed from brass and is engraved on the side of the square-section sighting tube with the maker J. Casartelli and Son, 43 Market Street, Manchester. It features a semi-circular silvered brass protractor scale graduated 0 to 90 degrees in both directions, equipped with a moving vernier arm and an integrated magnifying glass for precise readings. A spirit level vial is mounted above the scale. The second item is a brass-mounted spirit level featuring a dark polished wood base, likely mahogany, with a heavy brass top plate. This plate is secured with screws and contains two inset bubble vials. There are no visible maker marks on the spirit level.
Condition report:
Both instruments exhibit a genuine aged patina and surface oxidation consistent with professional use. The Abney level remains mechanically functional with an intact magnifying lens, though the spirit level vial is opaque. The mahogany spirit level shows minor scuffs to the timber and tarnishing to the brass plate. The vials in the spirit level appear dark, potentially due to the age of the fluid or internal sediment. Neither item is accompanied by a case.
