Lot 217:
Description
This figurine is an example of Indian Dhokra folk art, traditionally produced in the regions of West Bengal, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. The piece is manufactured using the lost-wax casting method. The elephant is rendered in a stylised form with tubular legs and a trunk raised upwards, terminating in a five-pointed star-shaped ornament. The body features a raised decorative band with circular motifs, and the large ears are finished with a scalloped border. Seated upon the elephant is a rider depicted in a primitive style with prominent round eyes and slender limbs. The material is a cast copper alloy, likely brass, displaying a warm golden-brown patina with visible areas of darker oxidation. The underside reveals the porous texture and circular indentations characteristic of the casting process, with remnants of the clay core visible within the feet. No maker’s marks or inscriptions are present.
Height: 9 cm
Length: 9.5 cm.
Condition report:
The figurine is in good overall condition. There is general surface wear and light oxidation consistent with age. The casting exhibits minor pitting and surface irregularities inherent to the traditional manufacturing process.
