Lot 218:
Description
A collection of two cast metal figures of varying cultural styles and origins. The first item is a standing figural vessel holder in the West African style, attributed to the Akan or Ashanti traditions or the workshop of Derme Morou. The figure depicts a woman in a traditional posture, supporting a large globular vessel atop her head with her right arm while carrying a small child on her back. She is dressed in a long, textured wrap skirt and stands on a simple square integral base. The piece is rendered with stylized features and elongated proportions, produced using the lost-wax casting method. The second item is a decorative figurine produced in the Orientalist style, depicting a bearded man in a kneeling position. He is dressed in voluminous robes and wears a large, multi-wrapped turban, with his hands positioned as if holding a string of prayer beads. This piece is cast in Bronze with a warm finish and darker oxidation in the grooves for definition.
Figure 1: Height approximately 27 cm
Figure 2: Height approximately 9 cm.
Condition report:
Both items are in good overall condition. The West African figure displays surface pitting, casting flaws, and a rough texture inherent to the traditional lost-wax manufacturing process, along with minor surface oxidation and dust in recessed areas. The Orientalist figure shows minor surface wear and light scratches consistent with age and handling.
