Lot 281:
Description
This is a single-shot, break-action blank firing pistol of the pattern traditionally attributed to late 19th-century postal workers as a dog deterrent. The firearm features a short round barrel and a side-mounted hammer with a spur trigger design. The metal construction exhibits a heavy natural patina with significant oxidation and pitting across the frame and barrel. The furniture consists of smooth wooden bird’s-head grips held by a single transverse screw. This pocket-sized pistol lacks traditional sights or a trigger guard, consistent with its intended use as a noise-making device. No manufacturer markings, serial numbers, or calibre designations are legible on the piece due to the extensive surface wear and corrosion.
Condition report:
The metal surfaces are in poor to fair condition, displaying heavy oxidation, surface rust, and pitting throughout. The wooden grips show age-related wear and darkening but remain intact and free from major cracks. The mechanical action appears to function, however, we have not function-tested this firearm. The bore is not clearly visible but is expected to mirror the heavily oxidized external condition of the barrel.
