Lot 284:
Description
A mechanical bank in the form of a clown bust, produced in the style of 19th-century designs by Shepard Hardware Co. or John Harper and Co. The figure is constructed from painted cast iron and features a hand-to-mouth mechanism. The clown is depicted with a white face, red facial accents, a red pointed hat, and an orange ruffled collar. The torso is divided into red and black sections with a textured surface. The mechanism is activated by a lever located on the rear left shoulder, which moves the right hand towards the mouth. The base includes a recessed area for a mark, though it is currently illegible due to the casting quality.
Height: 7.5 inches (19 cm).
Condition report:
The bank shows significant paint wear and chipping throughout, particularly on the nose, hat, collar, and base. The casting is coarse, characteristic of a later 20th-century reproduction. The eyes remain fixed. The original metal base plate has been replaced with a modern black rubber stopper. The internal mechanism appears intact but has not been tested for full functionality.
