Description
A Suunto U-90 marine bulkhead-mount compass with an integrated clinometer, presented in a custom-built wooden housing. The instrument features a liquid-filled hemispherical acrylic dome containing a black compass card with white markings in five-degree increments and large numerals every thirty degrees, with the cardinal point West (W) visible. Two vertical yellow lubber lines are present on the dome for off-axis reading. Below the compass sphere is a fixed clinometer scale graduated 40-0-40 to measure a vessel’s angle of heel. The unit is constructed from black composite material and is mounted into a square-section wooden box with a curved top, finished in a warm-toned varnish. The base of the instrument and the compass card are marked SUUNTO FINLAND and U-90. The reverse of the wooden housing features a white cord attached to a metal toggle.
Condition report:
The instrument is in good working order. The liquid-filled compass chamber shows no large air bubbles. The acrylic dome exhibits minor surface dust and light scuffing consistent with age and maritime use. The wooden housing is structurally sound with minor surface wear and small areas of finish loss to the edges. No significant corrosion is noted on the mounting hardware.
