Description

A late 19th-century small oak cabinet in the Flemish Renaissance Revival style, suitable for use as a stationery, spice, or apothecary cabinet. This one-piece unit is constructed from solid oak with a dark-stained finish. The cabinet is surmounted by an elaborate pierced pediment carved with central acanthus leaves and scrolling foliate motifs. The single hinged door features a central rectangular panel deeply carved with foliate scrolls surrounding an inset oval metal medallion with a floral relief. The door is further decorated with four ornate metal corner mounts and a simple metal escutcheon. The front stiles are carved with flower heads and leaf patterns, while the base features a shaped apron. The side panels are decorated with incised diamond-pattern lattice work. The interior is divided into a single full-width upper shelf positioned above three vertical pigeonhole compartments and a lower shelf base. The reverse is fitted with two heavy-duty metal hanging loops, allowing for wall mounting or tabletop use. A light-coloured circular mark is present on the interior of the door where a previous label or attachment has been removed.

Width: 7 inches

Height: 15 inches

Depth: 5 inches.

Condition report:

The cabinet shows age-related wear consistent with its period. There is a prominent vertical shrinkage crack running through the full height of the back panel. The exterior shows minor scuffs, scratches, and a dark, aged patina throughout. The interior exhibits typical dust and surface wear. The door lock and hinges are functional.
