Description

A collection of three silver-toned metal boxes of varying designs. The first is a large rectangular jewellery box, likely of South Asian origin, featuring dense repousse and chased floral, foliate, and geometric decoration to all exterior surfaces. The box is fitted with a gold-toned metal three-dial combination lock to the front. The red velvet-lined interior is designed for bangle storage and includes multiple rows of assorted bangles in glass, metal, and rhinestone-set styles. The underside of the lid features four hooks and a gathered storage pocket. The second item is a medium-sized white metal jewellery box with similar ornate floral decoration. The hinged lid opens to reveal a cantilever mechanism with four upper square compartments and two lower rectangular sections, all lined in purple velvet, with a small rectangular mirror inset to the lid. The third item is a rectangular box, possibly a cigarette or vanity box, with an engine-turned textured finish and polished edges. The lid features a central rectangular cartouche engraved with the name CECIL. The box is supported by four small bracket feet and features a simple thumbpiece for opening. No hallmarks or maker’s marks are visible on any of the items.

Large box: 27 cm x 19 cm x 11 cm

Cantilever box: 23 cm x 16.5 cm x 11 cm

Engine-turned box: 14 cm x 11 cm x 3 cm.

Condition report:

The items are in good vintage condition. The two larger ornate boxes show surface tarnish and minor areas of oxidation consistent with age. The interior velvet linings are largely intact with some light surface dust. The cantilever mechanism is functional. The inset mirror shows some clouding and minor silvering loss. The engine-turned box exhibits light surface wear and minor scuffing to the polished edges.
