Lot 154:
Description
A set of thirty-two hand-carved chess pieces in a folding storage case that doubles as the playing board, executed in a traditional Polish folk art style typical of the Tatra Mountain region. The set comprises sixteen pieces in a natural light finish and sixteen in a dark stained finish. The pieces feature stylized decorative elements, including open-work crowns on the kings and queens, hand-burnt circular sunburst motifs on the bishops, and stylized horse head carvings for the knights. All pieces are fitted with green felt bases. The wooden case is finished with two-tone squares, the darker of which are decorated with carved foliate motifs. The border is detailed with hand-burnt algebraic notation from A to H and 1 to 8, accented with heart-shaped scrolls. The interior is lined with green flocking and features individual moulded compartments for piece storage. The case is secured with two metal swing-latch clasps. The materials include linden or sycamore wood, metal hardware, and felt lining.
Dimensions: 42cm x 42cm (unfolded).
Condition report:
The set is in good overall condition with all thirty-two pieces present. There are light signs of surface wear to the wooden case and pieces consistent with age and use. The interior flocking shows minor impressions from the pieces. The metal hardware is present and fully functional.
