Lot 156:
Description
A collection of vintage automotive and association badges and mascots, primarily of British origin and dating from the mid-20th century. The group includes two Automobile Association (AA) grille badges of differing sizes, constructed from chrome-plated die-cast metal with yellow composite backings. These are stamped with serial numbers 1E85677 and 0K98306 respectively, with the larger variant bearing the text Property of the AA Coventry St London W.1. and a notice stating This badge must be returned when membership ceases. Also present is a Royal Automobile Club (RAC) circular grille badge with a blue and white monogrammed centre, topped with a crown finial and stamped 2065 on the reverse. The collection includes a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) circular enamel badge with a crown finial and its original mounting clip. A shield-shaped Belgian souvenir badge is included, featuring enamelled quadrants depicting landmarks such as the Hotel de Ville and Manneken Pis, with the text Belgique and Bruxelles. Completing the set is a chrome-plated die-cast Jaguar leaper mascot mounted on a black rectangular backing plate. The items are constructed from a mix of chrome or nickel-plated base metals, enamel, and plastic or composite backings.
Condition report:
The collection shows significant signs of age and weathering consistent with external vehicle mounting. There is widespread pitting and oxidation to the chrome plating, particularly notable on the AA and Belgian badges. The yellow backings of the AA badges exhibit discolouration and surface wear. The RAC badge shows some loss to the blue finish in the central section. Reverse mounting hardware, including threaded studs and clips, shows various degrees of corrosion and surface rust.
