Lot 16:
Description
A collection of approximately 22 late 19th-century studio portrait photographs, primarily in the Carte de Visite (CdV) and cabinet card formats. The collection features a variety of Victorian-era studio portraits depicting men, women, and children in formal period attire, including individual portraits of women in bustled dresses and high-collared formal wear, and men in three-piece suits and military-style jackets. The cards bear printed marks from several Victorian photographers, primarily based in the Midlands and London, including G. Caldwell at the Rembrandt Art Studio, Carrington Street, Nottingham; J. Caloe & Son of Basford and Bulwell; Stanley of 23 Hertford Street, Coventry; Charles Koenig of 313 Edgware Road; W. Watson of Nottingham; Pearson Photographic Artist; The Newisham Studio; and J. H. Woodall. Several cards feature contemporary handwritten pencil or ink inscriptions on the reverse, including the name Miss Booth and a signed card from S. J. Whiles at The Shakespeare Studio.
Cabinet cards: approximately 165mm x 108mm
Cartes de Visite: approximately 102mm x 64mm.
Condition report:
Fair to good condition for their age. Most cards exhibit expected toning, light foxing, and occasional edge wear or surface scuffing. Several cards have remnants of black mounting paper adhered to the reverse, indicating they were previously housed in a photograph album.
