Description
This collection comprises an assortment of individual pin badges and medals, primarily representing British trade unions, professional associations, and social clubs from the mid to late 20th century. Notable industrial and trade union items include a Birmingham hallmarked silver National Union of Railwaymen (N.U.R.) 30-year membership badge with red and white enamel, dated 1937-1967 on the accompanying note; a National Union of Public Employees (N.U.P.E.) badge by Fattorini; a National Union of General and Municipal Workers (N.U.G.M.W.) shield; a UNISON Steward badge; and examples from the National Union of Printing, Bookbinding and Paper Workers, and the Printing Trades Alliance (25-year service). Professional and public service pieces include a National Association of Schoolmasters (N.A.S.) pin, a blue and white shield-shaped school Prefect badge, and items relating to the Post Office and Telecommunications service. Social and commercial items include a Saltcoats Bowling Club badge (established 1898), a Motorcycle 1983 commemorative pin, and a Bertie Bassett character pin. The items are constructed from base metals, gilt metal, and enamel, with many items accompanied by handwritten identification slips and stored in individual protective bags.
Condition report:
The collection is in mixed condition. Several items are well-preserved within plastic bags, retaining vibrant enamel and clear markings. Loose items show varying degrees of surface wear, oxidation to metal components, and minor enamel loss consistent with age and previous use. Handwritten identification labels are generally legible.
