Description

An antique Joseph Lucas Ltd No. B 116 rear lamp, manufactured in Birmingham, England. This oil-burning unit was designed for use on cycles or early motorcycles during the late 19th to early 20th century. The lamp is constructed from brass with remnants of original nickel or chrome plating and features a cylindrical body with decorative circular vent holes at the upper and lower sections. A prominent red faceted ruby glass lens is mounted within a hinged circular frame on the front side. The top is finished with a screw-thread finial, and the reverse side retains a two-piece steel mounting bracket secured with a tightening bolt. The base is clearly stamped with the manufacturer name Joseph Lucas Ltd, the model number No B 116, the location Birmingham, and the company trademark depicting a lion standing upon a torch.

Height: approximately 11 cm.

Condition report:

The lamp is presented in aged, unrestored condition. Much of the original plating has worn away, revealing the brass substrate with a darkened natural patina. There are visible surface scratches, minor indentations, and pitting consistent with age and use. The steel mounting bracket exhibits heavy surface oxidation and rust. The faceted glass lens remains intact without significant chips or cracks. The hinged mechanism and internal assembly have not been tested for mechanical operation.
