Lot 191:
Description
A 19th-century Victorian sarcophagus-shaped work box, likely intended for use as a tea caddy or sewing box, constructed from rosewood with decorative inlays. The hinged lid features a raised central section with gadrooned edges, a central foliate mother-of-pearl inlay, and is bordered by white metal stringing and mother-of-pearl roundels. The front panel is decorated with a mother-of-pearl floral escutcheon around the keyhole, with stringing and roundel motifs continuing along the edges of the lid and base. To each side is a turned wooden ring handle mounted on a circular boss. The box is raised on four turned wooden bun feet. The interior of the box is not visible in the provided images. No maker’s marks or signatures are present.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of age and significant wear. There are visible losses and lifting to sections of the mother-of-pearl and metal stringing inlays on both the lid and the front panel. One wooden ring handle has a prominent vertical crack through its centre. The wooden surfaces exhibit various scratches, small indentations, and areas of finish wear consistent with use. The metal elements show some tarnishing. No key is present for the lock.
