Lot 209:
Description
A mid-to-late 19th-century Victorian lidded stoneware jug, attributed to Dudson of Hanley, Staffordshire. The vessel is constructed with a vibrant blue ground featuring a distinctive fine stippled or mosaic texture, often referred to as an orange peel finish. It is decorated with high-relief white sprigged ornamentation depicting a coral or seaweed motif. The jug is of an ovoid form with a slightly flared neck and a broad pouring spout, fitted with a relief-moulded handle that carries a matching stippled texture. The piece is capped with its original hinged pewter lid, which includes a decorative thumb-lift. No maker marks are visible on the exterior or the base of the item. This style of sprigged stoneware is highly characteristic of the mid-Victorian production from the Staffordshire potteries.
Condition report:
The ceramic body is in good overall condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. The pewter lid exhibits expected age-related oxidation and minor surface wear, with the hinge remaining in working order.
