Description
A diverse collection of vintage and antique items encompassing scientific instruments, advertising memorabilia, and various curiosities. The scientific section includes several brass-cased pocket compasses, one featuring a paper dial and another with a hinged lid. A modern liquid-filled orienteering compass is mounted on a clear plastic base with map scales marked 0.5 Mile, 1:63360, and 1:25000. Also present is a map measurer or opisometer with a dial marked Made in Germany, a pair of brass drafting dividers, and a handheld magnifying glass with a dark frame. Advertising items consist of several gramophone needle tins: two His Master’s Voice (HMV) tins with the Nipper dog logo (one red, one yellow marked HALF TONE), a black tin for 200 highly refined STEEL NEEDLES marked City vs Chelsea, and a green Columbia Needles tin stating EACH PLAYS 10 RECORDS. A small red leatherette case is stamped must de Cartier. Decorative and religious objects include a wooden crucifix with bone or mother-of-pearl inlays and a metal corpus, an ornate silver-toned miniature picture frame, a metal animal figurine, and a set of metal cocktail picks with figural terminals. Further items include a variety of metal thimbles, mother-of-pearl handled tools such as a button hook and a carved stylus, a small black coin purse with an inset lens, a miniature harmonica, a metal tool stamped MANDOLINE, a brass measure, and a portion of a folding wooden ruler.
Condition report:
The items are in varied condition consistent with age and use. Visible wear includes oxidation and tarnish to metal components, surface scratches, and paint loss to the advertising tins. Some discolouration is present on the paper compass dials. The wooden ruler section shows signs of wear and age. Mechanical functions and the accuracy of the measuring instruments and compasses have not been tested.
