Lot 71:
Description
A hand-carved wooden bust depicting Christ, likely in the Man of Sorrows iconographic tradition. The sculpture is fashioned from a semi-cylindrical section of timber, possibly olive wood, with the reverse retaining its natural rough-hewn surface. The facial features are stylized, including arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, and a pointed beard. The head is adorned with a green-painted twisted headband, and two red teardrop-shaped marks are situated on the cheeks. The carving is finished with polychrome paint and a clear varnish. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible.
Height: Approximately 25 cm – 30 cm.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of age and wear. There are several areas of paint loss and chipping, most notably on the green headband, the tip of the nose, and the lower sections of the beard. The wood displays natural fissures, knots, and surface irregularities consistent with its folk-art construction. The reverse is unfinished and rough.
