Description
A pair of ornate inkwells constructed from cast brass, designed with an Orientalist or Neo-Gothic influence. Each item features a wide, six-pointed star-shaped base with intricate pierced scrollwork and foliate motifs. A central well is mounted to the base, featuring a hinged, domed lid decorated with chased floral and leaf patterns. The two pieces feature distinct finial designs: one with a tall, slender tapering point and the other with a shorter, bulbous form. The interior of the lids exhibits darkening and residue, which is also characteristic of traditional Indian oil lamps or diyas of the period. No glass liners are present.
Condition report:
Both items exhibit an aged patina with areas of darker oxidation in the recessed cast details. The metal shows typical surface wear and minor signs of age. Both hinged lids remain functional. There is a distinct difference in the finial designs between the two pieces. No glass or ceramic liners are included.
