Description
A vintage trapezoidal lap zither manufactured by Harbert Italiana in Milan, Italy, under licence from The Harbert Company, New York. The instrument, branded as The 3rd Man Jr. Zither and La Cetra Magica, was produced following the popularity of the zither soundtrack in the 1949 film The Third Man. It features a dark-stained wooden soundboard with a single circular sound hole. A decorative and functional paper label is affixed to the top, serving as a musical note guide with markings for the Italian solfège system: DO SI LA SOL FA MI RE DO SI LA SOL FA MI RE DO. The label includes the full manufacturer details, patent, and copyright information. The instrument utilises metal tuning pins and wire strings.
Condition report:
Offered in fair, unrestored condition. The wooden soundboard shows significant surface staining, scuffing, and wear consistent with age. Multiple strings are missing or broken, with one loose wire present. The metal tuning pins and bridge components exhibit surface oxidation and rust. The paper label is yellowed and shows minor wear to the edges.
