Lot 88:
Description
A collection of seven heraldic wall plaques of various origins, including Scottish clan crests, international military insignia, and university heraldry. The group contains two traditional Scottish clan crest plaques mounted on oak shields with tartan backgrounds. The first represents Clan Sutherland, featuring a garter badge with the motto Sans Peur and a wildcat crest on Sutherland tartan. The second represents Clan Hamilton, featuring a garter badge with the motto Through and an oak tree crest on Hamilton tartan. Both Scottish plaques retain partial paper labels on the reverse for M. W. Stephens Heraldic Woodcarvers, noted as approved by the Lyon Office and Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. The lot also features three Italian military plaques: a shield for the Italian Navy COMSUBIN (Comando Subacquei ed Incursori) special forces unit, a smaller shield for the Arditi Incursori branch, and a plaque for the Italian Air Force 1ª Brigata Aerea (1st Air Brigade). Included is a German Bundeswehr presentation plaque for Schweres Pionierregiment 706 (Heavy Engineer Regiment 706), featuring a metal insignia and a faded presentation plate. The collection is completed by a large, dark-stained wooden shield hand-painted with the coat of arms for the University of Cambridge. Materials include oak, stained hardwoods, cast metal, and printed fabric.
Condition report:
The collection is in good vintage condition with age-related wear throughout. The wooden mounts show various surface scratches, scuffs, and a naturally aged patina. The printed and metal insignia remain legible, though some exhibit minor fading and wear to the finishes. The paper labels on the reverse of the Scottish plaques are torn, aged, and discoloured. One Italian Air Force plaque shows a minor nick to the wooden edge.
