Description
A polished brass map reader’s compass presented in a mahogany-stained wooden box. The instrument features a circular body with an engraved 360-degree outer scale and a central needle with dual brass arms marked MAP and READER, pivoting on a green jewelled mount. An external locking screw is positioned on the side of the housing. The compass is housed in a square wooden box with a green velvet-effect interior and a glass viewing pane. The glass lid is etched with a circular motif depicting a three-masted sailing vessel surrounded by the text SPENCER & CO. LONDON 1905. Additional inscriptions on the lid include CAPTAIN CABIN, MAP READER COMPASS WITH MAGNIFYING GLASS, It is very useful in navigation science, and NOTE: Please lock the compass after use. The front of the box is fitted with a brass plaque inscribed SPENCER & CO. LONDON 1905. This item is a contemporary decorative reproduction of a nautical instrument.
Condition report:
The item is in good overall condition. The brass components show a bright finish with very light surface wear and minimal patination. The glass panes to the compass and the box lid are clear and free from chips or cracks. The wooden case is well-preserved with minor scuffing consistent with handling. The interior lining is clean and the brass latches are functional.
