Description
Alwyn G. Pavey (AGP), this lot comprises a relief plaque and a decorative miner’s safety lamp. The plaque is produced in cold-cast bronze and depicts a detailed subterranean scene of coal miners working at the face with a mechanical shearer and pit props. The foreground figure is shown in a crouching position holding a safety lamp. The piece is incised with the artist’s initials and date © AGP 98 at the lower right. The accompanying decorative miner’s safety lamp is constructed from polished brass with a cylindrical glass chimney protected by vertical rods. It features an integral hanging hook and is embellished with an oval brass plaque depicting the Welsh dragon above the word CYMRU. These items are late 20th-century commemorative pieces related to the Welsh coal mining industry.
Condition report:
Both items appear to be in good condition. The relief plaque has a uniform dark brown patina with no visible chips or cracks. The brass safety lamp shows minor surface wear and faint tarnishing consistent with age and display.
