Description
A vintage Fowler’s Universal Calculator, manufactured by Fowler and Co. of Manchester, England. The instrument is constructed in a pocket watch format, featuring a polished white metal case and two knurled control crowns used to operate the internal dials. The dial is protected by a clear cover and contains several concentric scales designed for engineering and mathematical calculations. The centre of the dial is printed with Fowler’s Universal Calculator, and below this, Patent and Fowler and Co Manchester. The concentric scales include functions for multiplication, division, reciprocals marked Recips, logarithms marked Logs, sines marked Sines, and tangents marked Tans. The outermost scales provide conversions for yards to metres (Yds to Mtrs), metres to yards (Mtrs to Yds), pounds to kilograms (Lbs to Kgs), and kilograms to pounds (Kgs to Lbs). The back of the metal case is plain and polished. The instrument is accompanied by its original brown textured leather pouch, which is embossed on the front flap with the inscription Fowler’s Calculator Made in England.
Condition report:
The item appears to be in good overall condition. The dial and scales are clear and highly legible. The white metal case shows light surface scratches and minor tarnishing appropriate for its age. Both crowns are present and appear mechanically functional. The leather pouch shows some signs of wear, particularly surface rubbing and wear to the fastening strap, but remains structurally sound.
