Lot 98:
Description
This collection comprises a diverse range of optical instruments, including several magnifying glasses of varying styles and periods. The lot features an adjustable brass desk magnifier mounted on a weighted circular base with a two-part articulated telescopic arm. Also included is a decorative hand magnifier featuring ornate white metal ferrules and an end-cap with a carved handle finished in a bone or celluloid effect. Three wooden-handled magnifiers are present: two larger examples with polished dark wood handles and silver-toned metal frames, and a smaller version with a turned wooden handle accompanied by a soft leather or chamois pouch. The collection is further supplemented by more modern items, including a black plastic rectangular reader bearing the printed mark Lumagny, a folding dual-lens pocket magnifier in a black plastic housing, and a standard circular hand magnifier with a black plastic frame. The group is housed in a simple pine-style wooden storage box and includes an additional separate wooden tool handle with a metal tip. Construction materials include brass, stained hardwood, white metal, glass, and synthetic plastics.
Condition report:
The items are in generally fair to good condition, showing signs of use and age consistent with their nature. The glass lenses exhibit varying degrees of fine surface scratching, dust, and minor age wear, though they remain functional. Metal components show some surface tarnish and patination, particularly on the brass stand and the silver-toned frames. The wooden handles and the storage box show typical cosmetic scuffs and minor wear to the finish. The mechanical articulated joints of the desk magnifier appear to be in working order.
