Description

A folding wooden diptych frame housing a pair of reverse-painted slate panels. The left panel depicts a gentleman in a brown jacket and light-coloured trousers seated at a circular table on a classical veranda, accompanied by two dogs. The right panel portrays a seated woman in a green evening gown with long gloves reading a book, with the letters C V D inscribed on the spine, accompanied by a large black dog in a domestic interior. The reverse of each glass panel is finished with a dark, matte surface resembling slate, suggesting use as a writing or memo board. The wooden frames are joined by brass hinges and secured with a sliding metal barrel latch.

Height: 22.5 cm.

Condition report:

The left glass panel exhibits significant flaking and loss to the reverse-painted decoration, particularly in the lower-left section. The right panel remains largely intact with minor surface wear. The wooden frames show visible scuffs, scratches, and general wear to the finish throughout. The brass hinges and sliding latch are functional but show surface oxidation and tarnishing. The slate-textured reverse shows minor surface abrasions and residue consistent with use.
