Lot 175:
Description
This antique instrument is an adjustable gunpowder and shot measure manufactured by the Manufacture Française d’Armes et Cycles de Saint-Étienne (Manufrance). Designed for the manual reloading of cartridges, the tool consists of a cylindrical brass measuring chamber with a sliding internal cup that allows for volume adjustment. The measuring component is fitted with a spring-loaded lever mechanism and a small knurled adjustment screw near the base. The metal parts are nickel-plated and attached to a turned dark hardwood handle, likely walnut, which features a rounded terminal. The base of the measuring cylinder is stamped with a circular mark that reads MANUFACTURE FRANCAISE SAINT-ETIENNE around the circumference and ARMES ET CYCLES in the centre circle.
Condition report:
The measure is in good antique condition showing signs of age and use. The nickel plating on the brass components exhibits visible surface oxidation, pitting, and some loss of finish. The wooden handle remains well-preserved with a deep natural patina and minor surface scuffs. The spring mechanism and adjustment screw appear to be intact and functional.
