Lot 180:
Description
A traditional European Gesteckpfeife, or hunting pipe, of modular construction. The pipe is fashioned from dark wood, featuring extensive deep-relief carvings of foliate motifs and textured patterns across the stem and bowl. A central carved panel on the bowl depicts a stag within a landscape setting. The bowl is fitted with a hinged white-metal lid or windcap, which is decorated with pierced scrollwork. A white cotton cord with tassels connects the separate components of the pipe. The curved mouthpiece is made of a dark, polished material. This style of tobacco pipe was commonly produced in Germany and Central Europe. No manufacturer marks, patent dates, or signatures are discernable on the exterior surfaces.
Condition report:
The pipe is in good overall condition with an aged patina. Minor surface wear and light scratches are visible, consistent with historical use. Some accumulation of dust is present within the deep-relief carvings. The hinged metal windcap remains functional. The white cotton cord exhibits some discolouration and fraying at the tassels.
