Lot 181:
Description
This item is a Japanese-style decorative dagger, patterned after a traditional tanto or aikuchi, likely produced during the late 19th to mid-20th century for the export market. The dagger features a single-edged, slightly curved steel blade. Both the hilt and the scabbard are constructed from bone and are adorned with scrimshaw-style engravings highlighted with black pigment. These decorative elements depict classical Japanese nature motifs, including a bird perched on a branch, bamboo foliage, and pine needles. The scabbard and hilt are fitted with brass mounts, including a cross-guard, pommel, and two bands on the scabbard, one of which features a pierced attachment lug. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the steel blade or the brass fittings. The lower section of the bone scabbard displays stylized marks resembling grass-script calligraphy, though these appear to be decorative flourishes rather than a legible signature.
Condition report:
The dagger is in good vintage condition. The steel blade shows surface oxidation, spotting, and minor pitting commensurate with its age. The bone sections have developed a natural yellowish patina and exhibit light wear at the contact points with the brass fittings. The brass elements show surface tarnish and minor scratches. The scabbard remains structurally sound and holds the blade securely.
