Lot 182:
Description
A decorative lidded container of two-part construction, fashioned in the form of a stylised bird. The upper section, comprising the head and wings, serves as a lid and features an elongated, flat tail with a serrated end. The lower section forms the base or body of the vessel. The entire exterior is decorated with chased and incised patterns depicting plumage and foliate scrollwork. The item is fashioned from cast brass with a patinated finish. No maker’s marks or inscriptions are visible on the interior or exterior surfaces. Based on the style and decorative motifs, the piece is attributed to Indian or Indo-Persian manufacture, likely intended for use as a container for spices, snuff, or betel nuts.
Condition report:
The container exhibits signs of age and use consistent with its type. The interior of the base shows significant verdigris and oxidation. The exterior has a worn patina with scattered surface scratches, minor dents to the rim of the base, and light wear to the chased decoration.
