Lot 185:
Description
A French First World War commemorative cabinet figurine depicting the heroic carrier pigeon Vaillant. The bird is cast in metal with a dark brown patina and is shown perched on a rocky outcrop, which is incised with the name VAILLANT. The figure is mounted on a rectangular plinth of polished orange-red veined marble, the front of which features black cursive text reading Fort de Vaux. Vaillant was the last messenger pigeon dispatched from Fort de Vaux during the Battle of Verdun in June 1916, famously delivering a final plea for assistance despite being poisoned by gas.
Condition report:
The figurine appears to be in good overall condition consistent with its age. The metalwork retains an even patina with light surface wear and minor rubbing to higher points. The marble base displays natural veining and inclusions, with no significant chips or cracks visible.
