Lot 188:
Description
A pair of 19th or early 20th-century wooden-soled ice skates, characteristic of the Dutch or Fen style used for distance skating on frozen canals and ponds. The skates feature shaped wooden platforms designed to fit the foot, terminating in decorative upward-curving pointed tips. Long metal blades are securely attached to the underside of the wooden soles with rivets. Each skate retains its original system of adjustable leather fastening straps with metal buckles, designed to bind the skates to the wearer’s boots. The wooden sole of one skate bears incised numerical markings with a 2 positioned above a horizontal dividing line and 11 below, which indicates a size of 11 1/2.
Overall length: 38 cm.
Condition report:
These items show significant signs of age and historical use. The leather straps are heavily perished, being extremely dry and brittle with substantial cracking and some loss of material. The wooden soles have a deep, aged patina with various scuffs, abrasions, and stains. The metal blades show consistent surface oxidation and a dark patina throughout. There are no maker\'s signatures or modern authentication marks present.
