Lot 35:
Description
An antique carbide lamp, designed for use on a bicycle or small motorcycle. The piece is constructed with a cylindrical brass body featuring a top-mounted water reservoir and a lower chamber for calcium carbide. It is equipped with a large, forward-facing conical brass reflector containing a convex glass lens. The sides of the lamp are fitted with two faceted glass jewels, one red and one green, intended as navigation lights. Attached to the rear is a heavy-duty, spring-loaded mounting bracket made of iron, which incorporates a screw-clamp mechanism for vehicle attachment. The upper face of the iron bracket is stamped with a single capital letter I. While visually consistent with lamps produced by British makers such as Joseph Lucas Ltd or Powell and Hanmer in the early 20th century, no further manufacturer names or patent marks are discernible.
Condition report:
The lamp is presented in as-found condition. The brass body shows a natural aged patina with surface tarnishing and minor marks consistent with age. The iron mounting bracket displays significant surface oxidisation and heavy rust. The main convex glass lens and both side jewels are intact and free of visible cracks. The internal burner mechanism and seals have not been inspected, and the item is sold as a decorative collectible in untested condition.
