Lot 38:
Description
This novelty mantel clock is fashioned from a large, irregularly shaped lump of polished anthracite coal. The piece features a gold-toned inscription on the reverse that reads Echte Kohle / Handarbeit, which identifies it as German in origin, translating to Genuine Coal / Handmade. The clock face is set with applied gold-tone Roman numerals from I to XII and fitted with matching lance-shaped hour and minute hands. The reverse contains a hollowed-out cavity housing a quartz battery-operated movement.
Condition report:
The clock appears to be in good structural condition, retaining its natural texture and surface irregularities. Minor flaking or small chips may be present, which is characteristic of the coal material. The applied numerals and hands are secure and intact. The quartz movement has not been tested for working order.
