Lot 45:
Description
A vintage soprano clarinet, likely pitched in B-flat, constructed from dark wood, possibly African blackwood (grenadilla), with silver-toned metal keywork in the Boehm system. The instrument is comprised of five main components: a mouthpiece with a metal ligature and cap, a barrel, an upper joint, a lower joint, and a bell. The upper joint features a stamped square logo containing the stylized initials LG. Below the logo, the instrument is marked with H.160756 and the serial number 2230. The number 160756 corresponds to a British patent granted to Louis Gaston Boosey in the early 20th century. The clarinet is presented in a vintage hard-shell carrying case with a brown velvet-lined interior. Accessories include a small wire cleaning brush and a collection of reeds in plastic cases, some bearing the Rico brand name.
Total length assembled: approximately 26 inches.
Condition report:
The instrument shows signs of age and significant tarnish to the metal keywork throughout. While no major cracks are visible in the wooden body from external inspection, the pads and corks are of unknown age and will likely require professional replacement for the instrument to be in playable condition. The case is in poor aesthetic condition with visible external scuffing, oxidation to the metal hardware, and a non-original white plastic replacement handle.
