Lot 56:
Description
A late 19th-century German needlework house blessing, featuring a central oval panel worked in straw or raffia on a mesh ground. The needlework depicts foliate wheat-ear sprays flanking a central German inscription that reads: GESEGNET seien in diesem HAUS die da gehen EIN UND AUS. This translates to: Blessed be in this house those who go in and out. The panel is set behind glass within a shaped ebonised wooden frame of architectural form. The frame is profusely decorated with mother-of-pearl and abalone shell inlay, featuring mosaic-style borders and four eight-pointed star motifs at the corners. A portion of a measuring tape is visible at the bottom of the first image, though the full dimensions are not recorded.
Condition report:
The item is in good antique condition. The ebonised frame shows minor surface wear and small, scattered losses to the mother-of-pearl inlay consistent with age. The needlework panel exhibits typical fading to the organic straw materials and light toning to the mesh ground.
