Description

A specialised mechanical pigeon racing timing clock produced by Alfred Plasschaert of Wachtebeke, Belgium. The instrument is housed in a finger-jointed oak wooden case featuring a hinged lid and side panel. The top of the case is fitted with a cast metal swing handle and a brass latch mechanism. The front exterior is stamped with the serial number 76285, above a faint stamped mark reading THE PLASSCHAERT. A circular glazed aperture on the front reveals a white dial printed with ALFRED PLASSCHAERT, including a primary numerical scale and two smaller auxiliary dials for precision recording. A rectangular window on the side provides a view of an internal metal plate also stamped with the serial number 76285. The interior contains a complex, spring-driven clockwork mechanism made of brass and steel, featuring a large rotating aluminium recording disc and various associated gears. This type of clock was used to record the arrival times of birds by stamping a paper roll when a bird’s ring was inserted.

Approximate dimensions: 18cm x 15cm x 13cm.

Condition report:

The wooden case shows significant age-related wear, including surface scratches, staining, and a horizontal split running through the wood on at least two sides. The finger-jointing remains structurally sound. The internal mechanism appears largely complete and free from heavy corrosion but is dusty; it has not been tested for mechanical function or timing accuracy. The glazed windows are intact but show internal dust and require cleaning. The primary recording lever and one side latch are present. No key or paper rolls are included with this lot.
