Description
This large-format folio portfolio is titled Reproductions of Prints in the British Museum, Third Series, Part VI: Specimens of Etching by Rembrandt, Livens, and Bol 1630-1680. Published by order of the Trustees in 1912, the work comprises a collection of monochrome reproductions of etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Lievens, and Ferdinand Bol. The portfolio is quarter-bound in dark blue cloth with grey paper-covered boards and matching cloth corners, secured with green fabric ties. Internally, the reproductions are individually mounted on heavy cream-coloured card stock. The title page includes a central woodcut-style vignette depicting three putti.
Height: 48 cm.
Condition report:
The portfolio boards show significant signs of wear consistent with age, including heavy foxing, staining, and surface abrasions to the grey paper sections. The cloth binding at the spine and corners exhibits fraying and rubbing. The green fabric ties are present but show wear and fraying at the ends. Internally, the plates and their mounts remain generally well-preserved, though light foxing is visible on some margins and occasional handling marks are present.
