Description

This lot comprises two antique Tibetan carved wooden printing blocks, known as parshing, traditionally used for the production of prayer flags and religious illustrations in the Himalayan region. The block on the left features a complex relief carving of a wrathful Vajrayana Buddhist deity. The figure is depicted in a dynamic, multi-armed pose characteristic of protective dharmapala deities, surrounded by a border of stylised flames and roiling clouds. The block on the right features a central figure, possibly a protective deity or wind horse (lungta), surrounded by horizontal registers of incised text. The text is rendered in Tibetan Uchen script, commonly used for formal and religious documents. Both blocks are carved from single pieces of dark-stained hardwood and include integral, wedge-shaped handles at the top for use during the printing process. The reverse of each panel shows original saw marks and a weathered patina consistent with age and functional use.

Left block: 38 cm x 27.5 cm

Right block: 35 cm x 27.5 cm.

Condition report:

The blocks are in good antique condition, showing signs of significant age and functional use. There is general wear to the high points of the relief carving, minor chipping to the edges, and scattered surface abrasions. The block featuring script has a notable vertical drying crack extending from the top edge through the handle. Both blocks exhibit a deep, dark patina consistent with age and exposure.
