Description

A trio of vintage brass pea whistles manufactured by J. Hudson and Co. of Birmingham. This pattern of whistle was standard issue for British military officers and police forces from the late 19th through to the mid-20th century, including both World Wars. The whistles are constructed from brass and were originally finished with nickel plating. Each whistle retains its original internal cork pea. Two of the whistles are joined to a long-link brass chain with a T-bar fastener, designed to be secured through a tunic buttonhole. The third whistle is attached to a brown leather tab via a short curb-link chain, intended for fastening to a belt or Sam Browne strap. The whistles feature distinct stamped markings: one is marked The Acme Thunderer, another features the same text with a raised crescent bar below, and the third whistle displays an earlier marking including The Thunderer, J. Hudson and Co. Patent, Barr St, Birmingham.

Chain length: approximately 30cm.

Condition report:

The collection is in used vintage condition. There is significant loss of the original nickel plating across all three whistles, revealing the underlying brass and a natural aged patina with minor surface pitting. The leather attachment tab is heavily worn, showing signs of drying, cracking, and partial detachment. All three whistles retain their original internal cork peas and appear to be in functional order.
