Description
A trio of vintage British-made cylindrical whistles manufactured by J. Hudson and Co. of Birmingham. The collection includes one whistle stamped The Metropolitan with additional markings for J. Hudson and Co., Barr St., Birmingham. The remaining two whistles are stamped The Acme City and The Acme City Whistle respectively, both with Made in England markings. Each whistle is constructed from nickel-plated brass. One example retains a short steel link chain, while another features a knotted tan fabric lanyard. This pattern of whistle was historically adopted for use by police forces and military officers, as well as for various sporting applications.
Condition report:
All items exhibit significant signs of age and extensive use. There is widespread wear to the nickel plating, particularly on the bodies and mouthpieces, revealing the yellow brass base metal underneath. Surface pitting, oxidation, and tarnish are present throughout. The fabric lanyard shows discolouration and fraying consistent with age.
