Description
This early 20th-century stationery tray or document box was produced by the Lord Roberts Memorial Workshops, an organisation established to provide employment for disabled veterans. The item is constructed from wood with a yellow-ochre lacquered finish and black hand-painted Chinoiserie decoration in the japanned style. The removable rectangular lid features a central turned wooden finial and depicts an oriental-inspired landscape with figures, a pagoda, and stylised trees. The sides of the tray are decorated with floral motifs within cartouches and geometric lattice patterns at the corners. The interior of the lid is lined with green felt. Affixed to the interior base is the original printed oval paper label stating: Made by Disabled Soldiers & Sailors at the LORD ROBERTS MEMORIAL WORKSHOPS. SHOWROOMS 122 BROMPTON RD LONDON.S.W.3.
Width: 31 cm
Depth: 23 cm
Height: 8 cm.
Condition report:
The tray is in a condition commensurate with its age and intended use. There is significant surface wear to the lacquer and hand-painted decoration, including various areas of paint loss and rubbing. Chipping and abrasions are evident along the edges, corners, and the base of the gallery. The green felt lining shows light wear. The paper label remains intact and legible despite minor discolouration.
