Lot 141:
Description
This collection consists of several vintage and antique manual kitchen tools, primarily featuring five box-style grinders and one rotary drum grater. The central piece is a large, dark-stained wooden coffee mill with an open metal bowl hopper. It features a central oval metal badge embossed with a shield containing the letters H. G. E. and the inscription GARANTIERT GESCHMIEDETES MAHLWERK, identifying the manufacturer of the forged milling mechanism as being of German origin.
Adjacent to this is a large box coffee grinder with a dark-stained wooden body and a domed metal top with a sliding hopper door, fitted with a crank handle and a turned wooden knob. Another box-style grinder features white enamelled or ceramic side panels set within a wooden frame and topped with a metal hopper. A smaller mill in light-coloured wood features an external cast-iron gear mechanism on top and a decorative metal plaque on the front embossed with the word PEPPER. To the front left is a polished hardwood mill with an exposed metal gear assembly and a small wooden handle.
The foreground contains a mid-20th-century rotary drum grater with a cream-painted metal body, a wooden handle, and a screw-clamp base for attachment to a table or counter. Construction materials across the lot include various hardwoods, cast iron, steel, brass, and enamel. A wooden folding rule is present in the background for scale purposes.
Height of central H.G.E. grinder to top of handle: 26 cm
Height of domed grinder to top of handle: 21 cm
Width of central wooden grinder body: 15 cm
Length of rotary grater body: 24 cm.
Condition report:
The items are in used vintage condition with signs of age and domestic utility. There is visible oxidation and a developed patina on the metal components, including the hoppers and gears. The wooden bodies show surface wear, scratches, and minor finish loss. The cream-painted finish on the rotary grater shows some chipping and wear consistent with age. All units appear to be complete with their respective handles and cranks, though mechanical functionality has not been tested.
