Lot 159:
Description
Two Japanese carved katabori netsuke dating from the Meiji period. The first figure represents a seated elder or scholar in a contemplative pose, wearing traditional robes with incised geometric borders. The material exhibits a creamy patina and fine grain on the base, with two himotoshi holes to the reverse. The second figure consists of a group of performers, including a figure playing a taiko drum and another holding a folding fan. Their robes feature engraved kebori floral and sunburst patterns with brown tea-staining for depth. This piece also features two himotoshi holes and a small paper inventory label on the base marked 793. No signatures or artist marks are present.
Condition report:
Both items are in good antique condition with age-related wear and a natural yellowed patina. The seated elder shows minor surface grime and stable, fine drying cracks on the underside. The performer group shows crisp carving. The paper label on the base is yellowed and shows some wear. No significant chips or restorations are evident.
