Description

An antique drum microscope constructed from lacquered brass, a design characteristic of the 19th century. The instrument features a cylindrical main body with a large side aperture providing access to a gimbal-mounted sub-stage mirror, which is adjustable via an external brass thumb-screw. Above the drum base is an integrated circular stage for specimen placement. The optical system comprises multiple telescoping draw-tubes used for focusing the instrument, terminating in a single eyepiece at the top and a fixed objective lens housed at the base of the innermost tube. The entire assembly stands on a weighted, flared circular base with knurled edges. There are no visible maker’s marks, engravings, or scales present on the exterior surfaces.

Condition report:

The brass surfaces exhibit characteristic signs of age and use, including significant tarnishing, oxidation, and areas of wear to the original lacquer finish. The telescoping draw-tubes and the sub-stage mirror adjustment mechanism appear to be functional. The lenses are present, though their optical clarity and the functional state of the internal components have not been professionally tested. No carrying case or additional accessories are included.
