Description
An Art Deco period circular powder compact, dating circa 1920-1940. The body is crafted from a translucent, marbled yellow plastic, likely celluloid or Catalin. The hinged lid features an inset decorative panel protected by a clear cover, depicting a stylised crinoline lady motif. The figure is shown wearing a black bodice and an expansive yellow hooped skirt, holding a red rose, positioned before two simplified green trees. The scene is set against a shimmering background of crushed glitter or foil chips. The compact is finished with gold-toned metal rims and a thumb-piece release. The interior lid contains a circular glass mirror. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the exterior or interior.
Condition report:
The item is in good vintage condition. The interior glass mirror shows visible foxing and loss of silvering around the edges. The gold-toned metal mounts exhibit a natural patina and light surface tarnishing consistent with age and use. The marbled plastic body and the decorative lid insert remain well-preserved, with no visible cracks or significant damage.
