Lot 59:
Description
An assortment of cased silver-plated flatware and serving sets of European origin, including German and French examples.
The collection includes a cased dessert or pastry service featuring forks and spoons with ornate handles decorated with scroll and foliate motifs. The bowls of the spoons and the tines of the forks have a gilt finish. The interior silk lid of the case is marked for the retailer Das Haus der Bestecke, J. Bernards, Duisburg.
A further set comprises tablespoons in a classic French Filet or Fiddle and Thread pattern with shouldered stems. The case interior features a retailer’s silk ribbon for Giraudon, Bijoutier-Guéret.
Also included is a cased set of teaspoons featuring plain, tapered handles with a minimalist design, and a two-piece carving service consisting of a knife and a two-prong fork with rounded, bulbous handles.
The items appear to be silver-plated metal; no definitive hallmarks for solid silver are visible in the provided images.
Condition report:
The collection shows varying degrees of heavy tarnish, particularly to the German dessert service. There is expected surface wear, light scratching, and minor pitting consistent with age and use. The knife blade in the carving service shows visible surface oxidation. The cases show external scuffing to the edges and some staining or discolouration to the fabric linings.
