Lot 60:
Description
An assortment of decorative items featuring brass and steel components alongside turned and carved woodwork. The lot includes a dome-top tea caddy finished in burr wood veneer, likely walnut or amboyna, featuring decorative pierced brass strapwork and a central escutcheon. The interior is fabric-lined and contains two matching lidded compartments. A tiered burr wood desk stand with a lower pen rest groove is also present. The collection features two coopered wooden tankards with brass bands and cast brass handles. A globular jar is constructed of wood with vertical brass strips and a circular brass lid fitted with a ring pull handle. Also included is a carved hardwood figure of a seated Buddha in the Dhyana Mudra pose, a small parquetry trinket box with geometric inlays, and a carved wooden novelty ashtray with indistinct carved text. Completing the lot is a serrated metal tool with a wrought steel blade, a metal ferrule, and a turned wooden handle. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the items.
Condition report:
The collection shows signs of significant age and use. The brass components on the tea caddy, tankards, and globular jar exhibit an original aged patina with areas of tarnish and verdigris. The steel blade of the serrated tool shows surface oxidation and rust. The interior fabric of the tea caddy is worn and discoloured. The parquetry box has several sections of missing or lifting veneer on the lid and sides. The wooden ashtray shows charring in the well. General surface abrasions, minor scuffing, and finish wear are present across all wooden surfaces.
