Lot 65:
Description
This collection consists of three cased sets of knives dating from the early to mid-20th century.
The first set is a service of twelve table knives presented in a red faux-leather case. These knives feature cream-coloured synthetic handles, likely celluloid or xylonite, and stainless steel blades. The interior lid of the case is gilt-stamped with the retailer mark: HORLOGERIE BIJOUTERIE / ORFÉVRERIE / COMPTOIR DES GRUES / 82, RUE GABRIEL PÉRI / SAINT-DENIS. This indicates the set was retailed by a jeweller and silversmith located in Saint-Denis, France.
The second set, housed in a blue textured case with an orange and yellow satin and velvet lining, contains six knives likely intended for steak or fruit. The handles are crafted from a mottled brown and yellow synthetic material in imitation of tortoiseshell, finished with decorative cast metal ferrules and steel blades.
The third set comprises twelve table knives in a brown faux-leather case with a cream satin lining. These knives are designed with faceted cream-coloured synthetic handles and stainless steel blades.
Condition report:
The sets are in good overall vintage condition. The cases exhibit external scuffing and internal wear commensurate with age. The blades show minor surface scratches and some instances of light oxidation or tarnish typical of older steel. The synthetic handles are well-preserved without significant cracking or discoloration.
