Description
This lot comprises three vintage boxed cutlery sets by notable European makers.
The first set, by Walker & Hall Ltd of Sheffield, consists of twelve spoons and a pair of matching sugar tongs. The handle terminals are decorated with delicate floral and scroll motifs. The interior lid of the black case is printed in gold with the maker’s name and flag logo. No British sterling silver hallmarks are present; the set is constructed from silver-plated metal.
The second set features four knives by the French firm Christofle. The handles are decorated with ornate raised scrollwork in a classical style. The blades bear the etched mark CHRISTOFLE. The interior red silk lid lining is marked ORFEVRERIE CHRISTOFLE, Pavillon de Hanovre, Boulevard des Italiens, 33, Paris. These items are silver-plated.
The third set includes twelve spoons by Wellner, featuring highly decorative handles with intricate pierced openwork floral and foliate motifs. The interior lid is marked WELLNER SILVELLO. Silvello is a proprietary silver-plated alloy used by the German manufacturer.
No solid silver hallmarks were identified on any of the pieces in this collection.
Condition report:
The items show signs of age-related tarnishing and surface wear consistent with light use. The presentation cases show exterior scuffing, particularly at the corners, and some wear to the interior linings and hinges.
