Lot 81:
Description
An assortment of decorative metalware items including cast bronze figurines, a mixed-media animal sculpture, and a commemorative copper tray.
The collection includes a circular hand-hammered copper tray or ashtray featuring four notches to the rim. The rim is decorated with embossed figures of African wildlife, including a lion, rhinoceros, elephant, buffalo, and zebra. At the centre is an applied silver-toned metal medallion featuring the heraldic crest and name for Castle Lager.
Accompanying this is a cast bronze figurine in the South Asian style depicting a mahout or deity seated upon the neck of an elephant. The elephant is adorned with an ornate, patterned caparison or saddlecloth.
A second cast bronze figurine depicts a standing deity or Bodhisattva in the South Asian style, possibly Nepalese or Tibetan. The figure stands in a graceful pose upon a circular lotus-petal base, wearing an elaborate crown and jewellery. One hand is held in the varada mudra (boon-granting gesture), and a stylized floral element is positioned behind the left shoulder.
The lot also features a decorative animal sculpture from the late 20th century, comprising two polished brass or bronze dolphins leaping from a stylized wave-form base. The base is finished with a green verdigris patina and is mounted upon a circular polished green marble or serpentine plinth.
Standing deity height: approx. 20 cm
Elephant figurine height: approx. 13 cm
Copper tray diameter: approx. 24 cm
Dolphin sculpture height: approx. 14 cm.
Condition report:
All items are in good overall condition. The copper tray displays a bright polished finish with minor surface marks and light oxidation consistent with age. The cast bronze elephant and deity figurines exhibit an aged, dark brown patina with areas of surface wear and minor verdigris in the deeper recesses of the casting. The dolphin sculpture shows some minor surface oxidation to the polished dolphins, while the marble base is free from significant chips or cracks.
